About DSFN

Launched in 2017 by veteran high school sports and recruiting insiders Jim Baxter and Chris Hughes, the Deep South Sports Network is an independent sports media company that focuses on reporting on and promoting amateur sports and the student-athletes that participate in them.

While the brand name of Deep South Football didn’t become a reality until August of 2017, the concept to create the network has been a work in progress for many years and the team members involved in this venture have spent much of the past twenty-plus years to make it happen.

After a tour in the U.S. Air Force, Jim Baxter left the high school coaching ranks to start a South Carolina recruiting newsletter in the mid 1980’s and that business quickly grew into training quarterbacks and eventually working full-time as the creator and publisher of S.C. Varsity on the Rivals.com network.

Similarly, Chris Hughes is a veteran of the armed forces, he is medically retired from the U.S. Army and spent 15-years serving his country in the famed 82nd Airborne Division and U.S. Army Special Operations Command, and also has over 10-years experience as a high school football coach in North Carolina.  After working with NCHSFootball.com beginning in 2001, he created the website CarolinaPreps.com in 2007 and under his direction, it has become one of the top high school football websites in the Tar Heel State.

While Deep South Football is a relatively young company that will continue to grown in size and scope, the foundation is firmly established and ready to grown in the coming years.  The addition of GeorgiaVarsity.com and VirginiaGridiron.com has already extended the reach of the network and discussions are already in place to add more state sites to the network.
